Karatsu ware is one of Japan’s most notable traditional crafts and the source of many masterpieces used in tea ceremonies.
Karatsu ware charms us with its rustic, simple earthiness. Many local potteries maintain the tradition of hand-made ware shaped on a kick wheel, bringing into play the characteristics of the clays that typify the Karatsu area.
They bake their pottery in wood-fired climbing kilns to fully bring out the natural characteristics of the distinctive glazes. |
